11 Haitian Designers You Should Know
BGLH highlighted 11 amazingly talented Haitian designers. My favorite of the bunch is Stella Jean.
The Italian-Haitian model turned designer has been gliding up the fashion ranks. It started with Vogue Italia talent contest 'Who Is On Next' win - which didn't come easy. Her applications were rejected the previous two years - third time's a charm.
In 2013, she presented her debut collection at Milan Fashion Week. The following year, Giorgio Armani, in an unprecedented move, personally selected Jean's Spring/Summer 2014 collection to show at his 550-seat Teatro show space during Milan Fashion Week. Not only was her show a beautiful success it was sustainably sourced.
Jean's women's line keeps the classic feminine tailoring from her Italian roots and pulls bright colors and bold patterns from her Haitian heritage. Jean states her goal is to "communicate through clothes a concept of opposite worlds and traditions fusing together in a sophisticated way and standing side by side with equal importance, not covering the other up". I'd say she succeeds!
